Who We Are
The General Insurance Statistical Agency (GISA) was incorporated as a not-for-profit corporation in June 2005 and appointed, effective April 1, 2006, as the statistical agent for nine participating insurance regulatory authorities across Canada, namely those of Alberta, New Brunswick, Newfoundland & Labrador, the Northwest Territories, Nova Scotia, Nunavut, Ontario, Prince Edward Island and the Yukon.
GISA was established to improve the governance, accountability and oversight, as well as the reliability and objectivity, of insurance statistical data and financial information in member jurisdictions.
GISA provides a governance, accountability and oversight framework for the mandated statistical data and financial information collected, analysed and reported on behalf of these participating jurisdictions.
As the statistical agent, GISA:
• Promotes the timeliness of statistical data collection, analysis and reporting mechanisms;
• Acts on behalf of the participating insurance regulators to coordinate and harmonize the statistical data filing requirements for
insurers regarding the experience of their business in such jurisdictions; and
• Promotes the quality and value of statistical data generated by licensed insurers.
Mission Statement
GISA’s mission is to provide effective oversight of statistical plans and related insurance data, ensuring that timely, reliable, accurate and value-added information is efficiently produced to meet the needs of an evolving insurance marketplace.
GISA’s Strategic Plan describes a vision for the organization into the future, outlining priorities and initiatives to be undertaken over a three-year planning period.
Governance
GISA’s governance structure includes a tripartite Board of Directors of 14 members comprised of Regulators, Industry Representatives and Public Representatives.
